Poor you. Ingrown toe nails are incredibly painful. I had one and used to cry when I walked. A chiropodist will cure this for you by cutting out the ingrown bit and then cauterising it to prevent it growing back. Admittedly it’s not pleasant, but the relief is well worth it. Afterwards you will have to keep it scrupulously clean for a couple of weeks to prevent infection. In the meantime, it does sound very nasty and I suggest you see your GP to rule out infection or get it treated as otherwise it will just get worse and you won’t be able to walk on it. I had mine done two years ago and haven’t looked back so I urge you to get it done.It might be worth bathing it in a salt solution until you can get to your doc. Best of luck to you.

Most ‘doc in the box’s’ (free standing clinics) can handle an ingrown toenail, but just to make certain call the particular clinic you’re thinking about going to before you go and ask.

They’ll start by numbing the toe; this means two injections on either side at the base of the toe which I’m not going to lie hurts and burns for about 30 seconds but then there is no more pain.

After the toe is numbed they’ll clean it up with a medical cleanser and maybe irrigate it if there is any pus.

And then the doctor will do one of two things depending on their expertise; the simple easy fix is to just cut that side of the toe nail out, clean the wound, and bandage it with directions for you to follow. The other method is to remove the entire toe nail and to put a special bandage on the toe to help the new toenail grow straight. With return visits to the doctor to make certain it’s healing correctly. Either method means that you’ll have instant relief with only minor pain for a few days.

And they might give you a quick injection in the arm of an antibiotic or they may just give a prescription for oral antibiotics.

Good luck!
