Question by sam: Respiratory therapists?
What all do respiratory therapists do? Ive never had any medical experience so I am wondering if I would be interested in this.

Hi Sam. The field of respiratory involves everything from home care, patient floor care, critical care, trauma, flight trauma team, and pulmonary rehab. We care for all patients from the premature infant to the elderly.
An RRT assesses patients (getting vital signs and listening to the lungs), gives breathing treatments, performs arterial blood gases, administers oxygen, performs pulmonary function tests, intubates patients (breathing tube from nose or mouth to lungs), and manages ventilator patients. You might be part of a flight team to transport patients between hospitals. We’re the ones in an emergency situation (code) managing the airway. (All those tv shows where people run into the room when a person stops breathing or heart stops and they’re working on them- we’re always there.) A rehab therapist helps perform pulmonary stress tests, teaches patients classes about breathing techniques and how to live their lives better, plus a host of other lessons, then monitors the patients while coaching them in a gym setting. I’m sure I’ve left something out here….

If you’re really interested, call the respirtory department at your local hospital and ask if you can come visit and shadow a therapist for a few days. Most departments will welcome you and will be more than happy to answer any questions. Ask to see all the different areas.

I shadowed several health care fields before deciding upon respiratory. It’s always good to get an inside look before deciding upon a career.
