Physical Therapy Assistant Question?
Question by K: Physical Therapy Assistant question?
I’m in the middle of trying to figure out what career path I’d like to take that I’ll enjoy but will also pay well enough. I did some research on PTA’s and think I might like it but just wanted some general info on it. In reading it says you assist the PT in implementing therapies and exercises, plus some administrative work like paperwork and equiptment handling. I just wanted to know how much do you really assist in therapy and what it’s like working with people who need the therapy. I can be kind of a shy person at first too so I’m concerned I may not have the personality type for this job. Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

K, this is going to depend upon the setting that you choose to work in. Shy people do well in this field for it brings them out of their shell. People who are in pain and need of help to do tasks will bring out the best in you. As for working with a therapist again this is going to depend upon the setting and the therapist. I have used the assistants who have worked with me pretty much as equals depending upon their skill levels. They have always been eager to learn and want to help others. They are going to have to do paperwork but just about everyone in the medical field has to do this. You get to know the patients and they you. Before you know it both of you are comfortable. If this is a field of interest to you I would suggest that you go to some places that have assistants and talk to them about their jobs. Go to different places to do this such as hospitals, rehab centers, and private practices.
