Physical therapy IS a branch of medical science. MDs frequently refer patients to licensed PTs for muskuloskeletal concerns. For example, osteoarthritis patients undergo physical therapy for mobility and for pain control. This is also in addition to the pain medications their MDs give them. How can there be conflict?

…how about using PTs as front line providers for musculoskeletal care. In an economy that is seeking to reduce healthcare costs, you could examine how the inefficiencies of the current system (having to see a physician first before getting a referral to PT…even in states where direct access to PTs is permitted, people are still often required to see a physician first) are driving up costs and waiting times for patients. Compare this to settings in which nurse practitioners can handle basic medical care. Why not allow the same for PTs, but for musculoskeletal problems? I’d also further examine the lack of training of US physicians in musculoskeletal medicine.
